Mount Meru is a dormant stratovolcano, situated 70km west of Mount Kilimanjaro. At a height of 4562m, it is the 5th highest mountain in Africa and often used as an acclimatization climb. The lower slopes of Meru feature diverse wildlife (far more than found on Kilimanjaro) including zebra, buffalo, elephants and giraffes.
National park fee payable for permit to climb (at Momella gate). All climbing parties are accompanied by an armed Park ranger as a precaution against potentially dangerous animals.
