Mardale Head Boulders from the approach path © clams
A concentrated boulder field in a picturesque setting just 15 minutes from the road. Features a good range of grades and styles. Recently developed (Summer 2021) but with some open project lines this venue deserves more work and attention. Landings are good but can be damp. Best problems include the classic Gimme Shelter (7a) and the eye-catching Mardale Original (6a).
From the parking at the end of the Haweswater road, head up the path towards Gatescarth Pass. After 10 minutes and a steepening take a kissing gate on the R into grassland and follow a smaller path (wet in places) which descends slightly to the boulders. Total approach time: 15 minutes.

Nice to see these blocks get some attention. Matt Wilkes and I climbed quite a few lines c.2001 before the foot and mouth outbreak. petegunn - 22/Jul/21 |
