Bouldering on Kinder © Tris

Crag features

Kinder South consists of a scattering of cliffs that overlook the tranquil Edale Valley, and reflect the friendlier side of Kinder - big bulbous outcrops of coarse but clean rock that get all the sun that is going. If you have never climbed on Kinder, and want to escape the crowds of the Eastern Edges, then this is probably the best place to start. The discontinuous line of crags along the rim of the moor are easily connected using the cliff-top path which means it is possible to do routes on several cliffs on a single visit. Add this to the fine views and good routes and you have the classic ingredients for a great mountain day out.

Approach notes

There is an extensive Pay and Display car park at the entrance to Edale village which is ideal for the steep ascents to Upper Tor and Nether Tor either directly up Grindsbook, or the path leading out right onto The Nab and up towards Ringing Roger, then back left to the cliffs.

On the road between Barber Booth and Upper Booth is a layby on the left with plentiful parking. From here, a good track leads through Upper Booth and on up the steep path of Jacob's Ladder on the ancient pack-horse route over to Hayfield. A right turn at the top of the steepest section leads to the small but high quality outcrop of Upper Edale Rocks and from here the rim path runs right past The Pagoda and then Crowden Towers.

No Access Issues

The scene of the Kinder trespass in 1932 has no access problems these days. Climbers and walkers should keep dogs under control at all times to avoid disturbing moorland birds and grazing sheep. There is occasional grouse shooting on the moors above Edale and access is not permitted during these periods.

Seasonal Restrictions

Dates: 15 March to 30 June

Reason: Nesting Birds

The restriction applies to all routes in the Ampitheatre Area of Kinder Downfall (ie from The Owl Of Minerva to The Downfall Climb) to prevent disturbance to nesting birds.
