Crag features
Endcliffe Quarry comprises of two south-facing walls and a superb arête hidden in a tree-shrouded and otherwise largely overgrown gritstone quarry. There are also a small collection of boulders below the quarry.
Approach notes
Park on Lees Road about 500m north of Stanton Lees, in a small layby (2 cars) from where there is a public footpath on the east side of the road (this leads eventually to Rowsley). Alternate parking is 80m further north.
Follow the path which bends left over a small grassy bank. There is a fence on the right below which is the quarry. Cross the fence at the far end, only 2-3 minutes from the car, curve around to the right to enter the quarry down an incline at its northern end. The routes are on two south-facing walls immediately on the right and a lone arête rising above rhododendrons another 50m further on, also on the right.
To locate the boulders, drop down the slope after the quarry then cut back west and follow base of slope until a couple of boulders come into view. One of these blocks is Dad's Arête. Bee Block is further on or alternatively drop down a steep slope shortly after turning right of the first footpath.

From the parking (53°10'08.8"N 1°37'22.4"W) follow the path east up a slight hill and around to the left/north, following a barbed wire-fence with stone posts for around 100 metres. Hop over just before the path comes out of the woods, and head east (big fir tree to the left, quarry down to the right) until you reach a dilapidated drystone wall, and hop over this where it turns 90 degrees. There should be a path that leads down into a densely wooded quarry bottom to your right (this goes down into the bottom of the quarry, through that, and eventually to the top of the slope that Bigger Than A Bee is at the bottom of).
The Slab is directly ahead once you've crossed the wall, roughly 15 metres down the slope - the green topout slab is visible peeking out of the hillside, but doesn't look like much from directly above. From the 90-degree bend in the wall, either head right along the top of the slope for around 50 metres then double back to follow a vague track that contours along the slope (easier) or throw yourself straight down the slope (Hard Very Soily). To get to Dad's Arete from the Slab, go further down the slope and head right/south until it appears in the base of the quarry. Or from Bigger Than a Bee, head downhill and curve left/north into the quarry. Droyd - 16/Jan/24 |
