Clattering Stones are the collection of rocks on the hillside to the west of Widdop Reservoir. The most concentrated area of rock is at the right-hand side when looking from the road, and is known locally as The Drums. To the left is an area of widely scattered boulders, The Clattering Stones. The rock is, by and large, very good and the area contains one of the highlights in the Calderdale area, the Clatterjack Boulder.
The crag sits high on the gentle summit slopes of the moor and thus receive any weather that is going, be that sunshine, wind or rain. A visit will be most profitable after a day or two of dry weather as the shaded boulders can take a while to dry. The Drums occupy a sheltered niche in the steep valley and tend to stay damp through much of the winter; a drier spell in spring through autumn is best.
Park at a good layby on the northwest end of Widdop Reservoir. Take the footpath down to the stream and follow this upstream for 200m to the third bridge. Cross this and strike up the hillside to your chosen objective.
For those bouldering in the font 6's this is worth a visit. Great problems, good views and landings. Use 27 crags website for topo's it's better than Yorkshire gritstone bouldering guide.
