Hill features

Despite its modest proportions, Averau forms quite a striking presence when viewed from the Falzarego Pass, perched like a top hat on the slopes above the more famous Cinque Torri.

It is home to a popular via ferrata, and the surrounding scenery and excellent rifugios make it the ideal location for a relaxing day out.

Approach notes

There are numerous approaches to Averau. The first and easiest is to take the Fedare chairlift from just below the Giau Pass on the west side. From Cortina d'Ampezzo, take the SS48

to the west towards the Falzarego Pass. In the village of Pocol, turn left onto the SS638 and follow the road towards the Giau Pass. Just below the pass, park at Rifugio Fedare and take the chairlift to Rifugio Averau, directly below the mountain itself.

Coming from Val Badia, it is equally easy to take the Cinque Torri chairlift. From the Falzarego Pass, descend the SS48 towards Cortina d'Ampezzo. At a prominent hairpin, turn into the large, well-signed car park at the 'Cinque Torri lift station'.
