Crag features

The crags in the Abercastle area face north and are best in summer evenings after a dry spell. The rock is of variable quality although the recently discovered deep water solo crag in the harbour has some excellent pocketed sandstone.

Approach notes

Parking is limited near the harbour particularly in high summer but there is normally space on the roadside in the village.

Approach from Abercastle harbour in 5-25 mins.

Restricted Access

Ynys Deullyn is half a mile north-west from Abercastle. The rock at Ynys Deullyn is extremely poor and there are no belays in place at the top of routes on the mainland. A thoroughly un-recommended crag!

Seasonal Restrictions

Dates: 1 March to 1 August

Reason: Nesting Birds

The crags at Ynys Deullyn have nesting restrictions 1st March - 1st Aug. The shingle beaches and coves around Ynys Deullyn are also used by seals for pupping August to December - please check before climbing and do not climb if there is a pup on the beach in sight of the climb. Craig Du, nearer to Abercastle is not affected by restrictions, nor is the DWS cave at the entrance to the Harbour.
