The crag has three sections: North, Central, and South, on an escarpment that runs for around a kilometre in length. The rock is high quality, a rippled and contorted gneiss or microgranite (?) with occasional layers of metamorphosed mudstone.
The North Sector features a mix of steep walls, aretes, and a clean S facing slab reaching 10m in height. There are attractive natural lines which require cleaning to remove the abundant 'sea grass'.
The steep Central Wall gives the most extensive area of rock at Culfern. More natural lines require some gardening, and the steep blank middle section provides an obvious challenge. Reaches 15m.
The South sector is more broken but with clean aretes and slabs up to 10m in height.
Culfern is South and West facing so gets all the sun going. It’s obvious from the road, beautifully situated - with views to the Atlantic and across the Flow Country, and it’s a friendly kind of place (no death landings or dank corners here)!
