Crag features

A once well-hidden boulder in the woods of Culloden, this weird conglomerate erratic now stands bald and clean amidst cleared forestry. Problems are open to a few variations, as is the nature of conglomerate rock. Traverses of the NW and SW faces, and link-ups of the two, are the highlights.

Access Advice

Recently (Aug 2022), forestry activity has recommenced on site. There is now a large, cleared track from near the climbers' parking spot to the boulder.

If machinery is operating on site, it is advised to stay away. However, if there is no activity on site, access is still allowed.

Mountaineering Scotland are aware of the access issues, and are in touch with the forestry owners. Please report any encounters with forestry workers to news@scottishbloc.com and we will liaise with Mountaineering Scotland.

Having recently been in touch with Davie Black, the access and conservation officer as Mountaineering Scotland, who in turn spoke to the management company regarding the area around the bloc, they are concerned about fly tipping, hence the cctv and wire to prevent parking. They also raised concerns about litter in the woods so please, so we don’t lose the ability to park there please be respectful and also do your best to remove any litter you may find. Thanks.

New wire up across the parking bay by the gate to prevent parking. There’s a sign on it that says “CCTV in Use” so be careful how you park and I guess you may be approached if entering the enclosure to the Boulder. The wire is red and difficult to see in low light.

The surrounding trees have been felled, opening it up to the breeze. It does feel a bit desolate though!

Tom Riach has grown on me. Have never taken a boulder pad as SW traverse does not require it - 'soloing' anything else is a good test of footwork. Better than the Inverness wall (you get to work it out yourself!).

An obvious remaining challenge is the NW Face traverse. Very fingery and sustained.

A surprisingly situated erratic, what's it doing there? A bit pine-needley and mossy in places, but a good wee collection of fingery problems.
