Crag features

The Peilstein is the largest and most beautiful climbing area near Vienna. There are almost 1000 routes and boulders of all grades on good quality, if sometimes polished, limestone. Climbing began as early as 1880, and every development can be traced on classic and modern routes. Grading sometimes feels a little harsh compared to elsewhere; the bolting is up to modern standards in close to all routes.

Accommodation is availlable at the Peilsteinhaus of the Alpine club.

Good topo of several sectors here.

Approach notes

From the parking lot at Holzschlag there are clearly defined paths heading south. The crag is reached by following the southerly paths through the woods.

Approach time: 15-20 mins depending on sector.

Alternative approaches, still only around 30' are availlable from Schwarzensee and Thalhof.

No Access Issues

Some sectors may be closed temporarily due to nesting birds. These are clearly signed depending on the birds choice of nesting sites and usually only are a very minor fraction of the climbing available.
