Crag features

Disused quarry located on the Somerset - Devon border. Until summer 2007 there has been no evidence that any of the lines have been climbed (please update if you have any previous info). As a result the rock is very loose in places & climbing is limited without a good cleanup.

That said, there are a few obvious boulder problems that can be done without any gardening. The quarry features 2 faces 15-20m high, which would feature some well protected mid grade routes as well as some sparsely protected harder routes - however top outs are likely to be dirty & there is potential for loose blocks, a good garden is required before rope climbing is safe.

If you are local it's worth a visit - (but bring a brush!) as there are no other crags in ~ 20miles.

The quarry has a number of faces, some of which are within a police firing range.

Approach notes

See grid reference for location. Park in the layby although make sure you leave enough space for tractors, or in the hamlet at the bottom of the hill.

The land is privately owned, although there have been no complaints as yet it is worth being subtle and making sure you take any litter etc.

Had a wonder down here today, It is obvious that there is a potential for a few routes - But not before a massive amount of gardening. As John said, the top outs are very overgrown (thorns etc) and also look very loose.

I'm going to go and investigate a bit tonight to see what the 'main' face is like (the bit outside of the firing range) the firing range part from what I saw when I last had a look wasn't worth a drive unless you're local and have time to kill (taking out loose blocks) that said, there were a few lines that looked doable without the risk of rock falls. I will take a few photos for people's Interest.

I'm off to Taunton next friday and have an hour or two to kill. Anyone been here in the last year and any info on how you find it

A quick note to anyone who is interested in this place. There are a couple of areas here. The faces in the police firing range (which has always been there) 'could' yeild some routes, however the rock is very loose in the mostpart. The Original face which we found is outside the firing range ~ 100m right of the range looking in, and features some slightly cleaner rock. This is where these boulder problems are located. There are vauge paths through the (dank) forest to the right which lead to the wall. Aggregate own the firing range, and as far as I know there have been no run-ins with police or quarry officials. I live closeby and have never seen anyone in it. That said, prob. best not to park cars in the entrance. I have no idea who owns the 'Original face', it's in a forest that covers most of the hill, certainly it's not used for anything. There are a couple of other disused quarries around here that could yield potential. If anyone fancies exploring get in touch. Cheers John

I went here a few weeks ago for a scout out. No shooting going on but there were cartridges around and raked sand in the banks where they must put the targets, along with a locked caravan/container. I think the place is used sporadically and not at weekends. I was there for about 20 mins having a look with my big white transit in the entrance layby and nobody bothered me. It's not called beacon hill quarry on the sign either - can't remember the exact name but if you're desperate I'll dig out the OS map or come and show you. Didn't look that promising to be honest apart from a few lines but what do I know, I'm a noob.

Has anybody been there of late? Very keen to get there but don't want to be shot! Will probably have a cheeky visit and see if I can get some cleaning in.
