Crag features

Crack Caves is the upper tear of a rather large cave/ mine system that (depending upon who to believe) dates back as early as the Vikings.

Although much of the rock is damaged by fires, there are some great problems around the supports at the cave openings up to 12m high
and can be a great spot for the rainy days.

Current problems range from V0 - V6

Crank, derived from “Grunk” meaning hill to the average Viking, Is the sleepy hamlet you reach by passing Fairfield hospital on the right and at the T junction facing the Nursery, take a right. Just opposite the first sharp left bend there is an unsealed road heading up over the hill, park at the base and continue up on foot.

After passing the three large trees on the hillcrest, bear left down the unsealed road towards a house in the woods. At the driveway entrance, take a right along the outer perimeter of the woods to the first path leading downwards.

DO NOT ENTER HOUSE PROPERTY – BIG VICIOUS DOGS!!

Follow the slope into the woods and within a few hundred yards the caves appear.

Most problems are on or around the Cave system pillars and roofs that you first see.Take care as some parts of the cave roof are not too stable due to fires. I advise no gear within roof cracks, just bring an extra crash mat.

any chance of some more pics being posted up?

Hey! Just noticed this picture. I've done loads of problems here (my wife is from Billinge). I'll try and write them up. It's a good spot and apparently a tunnel extended to the Sue Ryder old folks home from the back (scarcely believable).
