Queequeg solo on FA of Farewell Rib © Tom Last

Crag features

This crag consists of twin stand-alone blocks of limestone approx 35ft tall on the beach at Fossil Point on Farewell Spit, South Island, New Zealand.

The rock is solid limestone, with a foot or two of looser rock at the base which it is best to avoid. The landings are mostly sandy, so bring a rope bag, or solo!

There are many lines waiting to be climbed. These are mostly steep vertical and diagonal cracks which look as though they would take good wires and steep committing and crimpy faces with mimimal protection except for maybe camming devices.

The routes here may have been climbed before although I have been unable to find any mention of them.

Good routes on nice solid rock in a wonderful location.

Good topo here.

Approach notes

All of the routes here were completed during a walk around Farewell Spit. On return to the carpark, I discovered from the DOC office that the crag is known as fossil point and is presumably held in some regard by palaeontologists.

Suffice to say that although I didn't notice any fossils on the routes that I climbed, it should be noted that climbing may not be allowed on the crag. There was however, a felled tree to give access to the upper part of the crag and no signs to discourage would-be climbers.

In the abscence of further information, please use your own discretion.
