Crag features

This massive 10km cliff band towers above the Tarragona region and boasts over 600 sport climbs across 20 different sectors.  The Montsant routes see much less traffic than more popular (and easily accessible) destinations such as Siurana.  Therefore, Montsant provides a great reprieve from polished edges and crowds.  The climbing here is simply amazing and is similar in style to pocket-pulling found in Margalef.  This is Lynn Hill's favorite place to climb in Spain and we can see why!

However, the climbing season for Montsant is very limited by:  (1) bird bans, (2) summer heat, and (3) exposed cliffs susceptible to high winds.

The best time to visit is autumn and early winter.  We recommend staying in Cornudella de Montsant, La Morera de Montsant, or Escaladei.  For windy, cold days, head to more sheltered, lower-lying crags such as Totxos de La Morera.

Approach notes

Allow a lot of time for the drive and walk-in.

Estimated Time:  20-60 minutes for the uphill walks from the car to the crag + 20-60 minutes for the drive from Cornudella de Montsant (on very rocky dirt roads)

For each sector, there are detailed maps and descriptions in the Tarragona Climb book (by Pete O'Donovan and Dani Andrada).

Restricted Access

Raptor Ban:  for most crags from January 1st thru July 15th.  We noticed many books do not properly indicate these restrictions so it's best to assume your crag will have a bird ban.  To verify the regional bans, check the local resources at La Morera.  Caution:  the locals report climbers immediately for violating these restrictions and you will receive a citation.

Dirt Road Access:  Be aware the road into these sub-zones is not well-maintained.  Don't be suprised if you get a few scratches on your car or feel like 4wd in small sections would be preferable.  Get full insurance on your rental car before driving here.

Parking:  Once you arrive at the "parking" spot for your sub-zone, there's essentially no parking.  You'll likely need to find pull-offs into the bushes to avoid blocking the road.  Keep this in mind while driving in, in case you find a spot before the designated parking.
