Crag features

Basically a council installed 3 metre high artificial boulder with 90mm rubber matting all round.

Though its mainly used by kids there is chalk evidence of the odd boulderer. If you're a testosterone driven hard core boulderer looking for a challenge to pump those arms . . . don't bother! The routes arent hard, but then some indoors arent either.

If instead you want to do a bit of climbing outdoors (perhaps with the family) to keep some baseline strength in the arms, perhaps to experiment with a few moves in a safe environment, maybe to practice topping out (which you can't do indoors at most places), or because you can't get to the indoor walls further afield (its within walking distance of Brighton and Hove easy) then I reckon its worth a look if its local.

(Kids climb it so some routes are very easy, others, with a little bit of abstaining from using all the holds available, could be more interesting from a sitting start)

Approach notes

If you want to go to this man-made boulder the best way is to approach it in either direction along the A270 (The Old Shoreham Road) and park somewhere alongside Hove Park. You will have to squeeze in amongst the families using the park. There is an industrial park on the opposite side of the A270 which is easily seen on the south side of the road but parking here is restricted to limited time for shoppers.
In the park if you use the path that circumnavigates the whole thing you are aiming for the SW of the park just N of the toilets, cafe and tennis courts. Ignore the Goldstone Rock on the left at the very Southern end.
Free access all the time as its in an open park. Toilets etc. also available near by, as are tennis courts, bowling green, playground for kids etc.

No Access Issues

Went up to Hove Park Boulder for a few hours today. Much better then I expected, mainly beginner routes but there is evidence of fresh chalk under the arches and overhangs. Some of the routes the moderator has put up are really nice and experimenting is good. Wouldn't go out your way to go here but would be fantastic if local. Some children and dogs to ted to run underneath you when climbing so watch out.

I am going to use the rest of the "Summer" 2011 to work some routes on the boulder. There is enough to make something of it I think. Be careful with the descriptions as they will contain information on restrictions for feet and hands to make the routes work. Sit starts all round.

Too many positive holds for there to be any challenging routes but you can make up your own eliminates.

great place to train during the week, and certainly the highest recommended wall in the area - its free and with some imagination and elimination, a summer evenings training can be quite enjoyable. Not much point naming/grading every possible combination but I reckon routes of up to 6a are possible

Brighton based Adventure Unlimited created a handful of routes on the boulder that were displayed on the notice board before it was damaged. I can't remember them well but they included a couple of sitting starts, a heel hook and one that went under the north arch. Hove Park Boulder got me into climbing. At first I climbed up it and then traversed it. Now I pick a few holds or a feature and experiment. The routes I have posted above are a selection of my favourite climbs.
