Winewall is an esoteric gem. A small gritstone quarry that has been the subject of lots of recent cleaning and maintenance work (11 Oct 22). It's situated just above the village of Winewall on the B6250 . Although the old quarry consists of two separate areas, all of the current routes are in the deep quarry on the west side of the road.
Please note that the 'restricted access' flag is simply to alert folks to the nesting of crows and jackdaws in spring.
From the Colne - Keighley road (A6069) on the outskirts of Colne take the turning towards Trawden (B6250). After around a kilometer turn left and drive steeply, and carefully, up through Winewall village . At the top of the hill, just before the road flattens out a small lay-by is reached on the right as you pass the last buildings, adjacent to a steel gate and the village sign. From the gate (the slim can squeeze through!), follow a cleared path down a steep slope to turn left of a large tree and onto a grassy area facing The Vineyard. Other buttresses are down to the left.
Reason: Nesting Birds
Jackdaws nest on the crag. Although the BMC doesn't restrict climbing for these prolific birds who are very resilient to potential disturbance, it would be best ot avoid the crag whilst they are nesting to avoid attracting negative attention from local residents.A surprisingly impressive venue, though at the end of June 23, a bit infested by Himalayan balsam and nettles - take some gardening gloves! sn - 01/Jul/23 |
