Galdames © Mark Reeves

Crag features

Galdames consists of two crags that pack a lot in The rock is a compact and smooth form of limestone and nearly all the routes are technical in nature. The Sartalde sector is typified by small holds where good footwork pays dividends. The Sortadle sector has more features but is steeper with routes like the amazing layback flake of La Baba de Eso. There is a reasonable spread of grades in the 5s and 6s with more easy routes on the Sartalde Sector. Sortadle gets the evening sun and Sartalde gets the morning making it a reasonable place to spend the day and choose your sun and shade although both crags get the sun in the middle of the day.

Approach notes

From the main A-8 Santander-Bilbao road, turn south towards Muskiz-Somorrosto. From there, take the BI-2701 towards Sopuerta then turn left over a bridge onto the BI-3632 towards Galdames. After 4km turn left towards an industrial estate on the left and a prominent restaurant Geltoki Jatexea. Just as you pass the restaurant on the left make a sharp hairpin right along a dirt track. Follow this and it eventually turns into a concrete track and follow this past two switchbacks. Where the third switchback cuts back left, head straight on along a small and narrow dirt track - reasonable clearance on your vehicle needed. The road carries on to a small opening and parking below the crag. If you don't fancy that last bit you can park a little further back down on the main track.

Access Advice

There is seasonal restriction on some of the crag but not on the routes included in this guide. These other routes are not allowed from 1 February to 15 September at the time of writing.  This may change and full details can be found on a notice board in the car park.
