Crag features
The Porongurup national Park is located approximately 390kms drive from the Perth CBD or a 50km drive from Albany.
Castle Rock has become a busy tourist destination of late, after the instalment of a 'skywalk'. Unfortunately this new atrocity has rendered some of the good climbing once found here unclimbable. These routes include Mike Law's three star classic Vous (22). Furthermore, all of the belay bolts on top of the climbs have been removed. Now one has to use care and build anchors connected to the skywalk.
The climbing here is fantastic. It is steep and hard. Usually the climbs are technical, although there are a couple of off-width nightmares to be had. Care should be had when relying on some of the older carrots.
Gibraltar Rock is a large north facing monolith at the other end of the park. It is home to many multi-pitch climbs, both sport and trad
Approach notes
It is a 2.5km walk (uphill) to the Castle Rock. Park at the Castle Rock Car Park and Follow the signs up to Castle Rock.
For Gibraltar Rock:
Coming from Mount Barker drive along Mount Barker - Porongurup Road and turn right at Woodlands Drive. Turn left off Woodlands Drive onto the Scenic Drive. Continue along this road for approximately 3km and park at a large slab on the right side of the road.
From the slab there is a 4WD track that is blocked off by a wooden barrier. Continue on foot down this track until you come across two metal pickets on the left that are wrapped in blue, pink and white tape. From here just follow the faint path and tape.
The track will finish at the start of "Raven".
Alternatively you can just bush bash the whole way to the crag which is not that difficult.
The walk takes approximately 20-30 minutes.
No Access Issues
This is a national park and therefor a fee is expected to be paid depending on where you park. This is sign posted upon entry and is monitored by the ranger.
