Waldspielplatz is a small, rather hidden crag situated on the outskirts of Gratkorn about 10km north of Graz. The area was originally frequented for bouldering and was known by locals as "Geschissenes Platzl". In recent years, a number a number of short bolted lines were set ranging in length from 6m in the smallest sector up to approximately 20m at the highest parts. Today there stands approximately 40 bolted routes ranging from UIAA grade IV up to VIII- (4b up to 6c+). The rock is mainly good quality limestone and though the routes are short, they offer some interesting moves with a good variety of slabs, vertical and overhanging routes to try out. Most of the routes however, consist of bouldery cruxes separated by comparatively easy ground. Nonetheless, Waldspielplatz is a worthwhile and quieter alternative to the nearby popular Weinzödl spot. Being largely surrounded by dense forest, the rock remains largely in the shade during hot summer days.
Situated off the B67 from Graz to Gratkorn. From the parking directly beside the "Diskont" petrol station, head up the marked (red-white-red) trail into the woods and up the hill. Approach time: 5 mins
