Crag features

Porthtowan is an idylic beach setting with beach bar (blue bar), cafe (Beach cafe - amazing carrot cake and hot chocolate + nachos) and pub (The Unicorn). The beach itself at low tide offers some amazing surfing with wide areas to play with as the sand can stretch to being 1-2 miles long +. However, if you do surf or swim after some bouldering, be careful of the rip tide, and if you towards the climbs near chapel port be careful not to be caught out by the tide. Although there are some easy, yet sketchy, escapes should you need them, best one by the mermaid pool.

All climbs - minus horizontal crack are tidal so leave potentialy one to two hours before having access or climbing from High Tide.
Three climbs (so far) on left hand side (facing beach). From the surf club walk approx 15-200 metres following cliff, dont be tempted to climb until you reach first cave. It is choss and Bley terrible. The cave with 3 climbs in your will find with a straight arete, diagonally rightwards crack and another face further in with quartz middle. For reference there is a roof crack in the cave.

On the right you will find the horizontal crack in a lovely position for a bbq, small inlet and is a brilliant place. On incoming tide you can stay for much longer than others and if the low tide line that day isnt high can stay for as long as you want.

Following two climbs you follow the beach at low tide to the right (dont go left to lushingtons) towards chapel porth. You can walk all the way across. As you pass a extended boulder field about 400m along, look right, there are two further cliff extensions that extend out and down giving two lovely faces to have some fun on. Be careful about the tide once more, although there are escapes and pay attention to life guards.

There is a brilliant cafe with some classic cornish ice cream at chapel porth (only cash) and if tide comes in when there youcan walk back along cliffs (1.5 miles).

Approach notes

From Chiverton (A30, Starbucks, Services) follow main road signs to St Agnes. When at Seven Milestone garage turn left and follow signs to Porthtowan. Parking can be found at the surf club (left before The Unicorn) or in the pay and display. If you are tempted to park on road by blue bar, area directly by blue bar up cliff path is fine, on the road by parking is contextual and you can be caught out, play safe.
