General Rock - Gordon Mcgilvray on General Friction 5a © Brian Boyd

Crag features

On the eastern end of Hong Kong Island, a small blocky promontory known as General Rock can be seen on the steep eastern face of Mount Parker, midway between Sai Wan Ho and the summit. Adjacent to the south lies a large granite slab very similar in nature to Devil’s Peak climbing. It’s a quiet, isolated location with superb views across the harbour towards the mountain range behind Kowloon. You can give your shoulders and forearms a rest at General Friction but you’ll need steady footwork and a calm mind to deal with the smooth cruxes of the harder climbs. The crux sections are short and well-protected, however, so General Friction Slab is the place to get your friction head together.

Approach notes

An uphill approach from the Yiu Tung Shopping Centre, the start of which can be arrived at by private car / taxi / Uber or public transport from Sai Wan Ho MTR station. The approach is approximately 45 minutes.

Start at the Sai Wan Ho MTR station. Exit Door A onto Shing On Street. There’s a bus stop to your right and you’ll see a sign for the #50 green minibus at the far end. #50 buses make frequent and continuous loops of Sai Wan Ho terminating at the Yiu Tung Estate Bus Terminus, which is exactly where you want to get off. You can also take #50 back down to the MTR station.

Opposite the Yiu Tung shopping centre (on Yiu Hing Road) there is a short, concrete- covered rough path leading diagonally
up to the base of a slope stabilisation structure, equipped with metal ladderways and concrete terraces.

At the top of the concrete-covered path turn left, walk along the slope terrace to the first steel ladderway. This is the first of nine ladderways (one and two are steel) that eventually lead to the top of the engineered slope.

From the top of the slope stabilsation structure there is a well-worn dirt path equipped with hand-lines in places,
that continues up hill to intersect with a horizontal path contouring the hillside alongside a concrete catch water. Turn right and walk for a few minutes to where a set
of metal boards form a crossing over the catchwater next to a white numerical marker (number 3450) fixed to the inside of the catchwater.

Follow the concrete steps gradually uphill; passing over a flat, concreted area before ascending concrete-covered steps uphill to intersect with a higher, horizontal trail. Turn left and walk for several minutes, passing a large boulder on your right before turning a bend in the path and a trail leading up the ridgeline to the General Rock formation. With the rock formation behind, the trail continues into the bush and a fork right brings you to the top of the crag.

There is an abseil station to rappel down into the base of the crag or a steep scramble down on the right edge of the main slab when facing the harbour. Either bring a separate rope or make two abseils of approximately 25m each to gain the base.
