Crag features

It's hard to believe, but this collapsed bunker deep in the woods was the HQ for coordinating all Nazi submarine activity from 1943-1945. The Red Army blew it up shortly after the war ended, and the resulting chaos of massive walls leaning at all angles provides some very interesting and exciting climbing. It was discovered for climbing and first developed by the Berlin pioneering legend Thomas Meier in 1990; the routes (up to ca. 10m in height) are on reinforced concrete with artfully chipped and improved holds. The many rusty steel rebar remnants are an integral part of the routes, both as holds and as welcome possibilities for arranging thread protection, but you should always be aware of what might be poking out of the wall below you to spoil the enjoyment of a potential fall. This is not a Sport crag- the bolt protection is generally adequate, but the many possibilities for additional wire, cam and thread placements should not be ignored. There are good lower-offs and/or abseil/toprope anchors, and a bouldering mat will suffice for some of the shorter routes.

The wide range of climbing styles and "rock" formations make this unique and historic location well worth a visit from Berlin.

Approach notes

By car from the centre of Berlin to the village of Lanke ca. 50 min; by public transport ca. 1½h. From Lanke 1.5km south towards Bernau; park at a small layby on the L ca 200m after the bus stop "Bergauf". Take the track going left into the wood. Straight on until a junction with a wider forestry road, where a white house appears to the left through the trees. Turn right along the forestry road and follow it for a few minutes until a T-junction. Left here, and the bunker soon appears to your left between the trees. The smaller bunker to the right of the junction has some boulder problems and also the "crevasse", on (in) which many Berlin climbers with alpine ambitions have honed their (self-) rescue techniques.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE THIS FAR; heavy fines have been imposed for obstruction of forestry vehicles.

Access Advice

No offical access, but apparently no problems. Do not drive into the woods and park near the bunker, as this could potentially antagonise the landowner. No dogs allowed; no fires.
