Nant Bwrefwr is the side stream/tributary to river Caerfanell at Blaen-y-Glyn. There are numerous icy scrambles between 5 larger falls ranging in height up to 20m over a distance of 800m. Grades vary by streamflow/build up, but in optimum condition expect scottish III or short IV. Infrequently in condition. Requires a long period of consistent minus 3/5/7 Celsius to form. Recent tree felling may help. Carry a few screws/wires/slings. Expect protectionless climbing on half formed water ice or top roping. Could be combined with Torpantau upper fall and Lower Caerfanell fall in absolutely optimum winter conditions (1992?) 'A locals once in a lifetime experience'. Can be top roped in less optimum conditions. Finish the route 200m above upper car park. Descend by Craig Fan Du path and road to lower Blaen-Y-Glyn. Caution for deep water and moving water which may not be obvious but usually below falls at plunge pools.
Approach notes
Nant Bwrefwr is the side stream to R. Caerfanell. Often referred to as Blaen y Glyn waterfalls nr Torpantau. Drive from Talybont (near A40) via Abercynafon to Lower Blaen-y-Glyn car park (less demanding) or via Merthyr to Torpantau and Upper Blaen-y-Glyn car park( arguably more demanding?). Caution the road between Lower and Upper Blaen-y-Glyn is steep and frequently black iced or snow iced in winter conditions.Regularly impassable, inspection is adviseable.
From Lower Blaen-y-Glyn car park. Take the forest track North West for 500m to Nant Bwrefwr (major stream). The confluence 1st pitch is below the track where it crosses the stream.The route can follow the stream/gorge choosing/avoiding sections where necessary to finish above the Upper Blaen-y-Glyn car park. Waterfalls on the Nant are marked on the OS map/Bing maps as Black Hache lines. References here are approximate. Take stream or path.
