Crag features
The Head Stone stands at the head of the Rivelin Valley. It is said that on a certain day of the year the stone turns its face towards the rising sun.
Also known as Stump John, the Priestley Stone and the Cock Crowing Stone.
Approach notes
From Manchester Road A57:
Park on the A57 (GPS Coordinates/Streetview). Follow the path from the parking into the woods, when you see a bridge do not cross it and instead turn right along a footpath which runs along the northern bank of Rivelin Brook. At the end of the path, turn left and head up onto the moorland. At a crossroads of paths, turn right. The Head Stone should be clearly visible (ViewRanger Map).
From Rivelin Dams:
Park at Rivelin Resevoir car park (GPS Coordinates). Walk west along Wyming Brook Drive until after the track bends back on itself. Continue west on a footpath via Reddicar Clough to the Head Stone (ViewRanger Map).
