Crag features

From NWB 2017... "Here we have Welsh mountain bouldering of the highest order. This marvellously secluded amphitheatre lies to the east of Cnicht's summit and is little visited, except by the hill walking fraternity. The boulders scattered around the cwm are composed of the magic brown stuff: yes, more of that wonderful dolerite, which in places is not too dissimilar to that found at Porth Ysgo. Cwm y Foel is a special place worthy of a full day expedition; pack a big box of butties, plenty of water and go see for yourself."

Approach notes

90 minutes! ...It is possible to walk in via Cwmorthin from Tan y Grisiau, or even somewhat epically from Nant Mor, however the most common approach used is from Croesor. From the National Park car park in Croesor walk along the path and road which leads north eastwards down the valley. At the last houses the road changes to a track and turns leftwards to join another track running along the valley parallel to the river. Follow this for 400m until a footpath leads off leftwards to cross a small bridge over the river. Continue on the footpath as it rises up and traverses the side of the valley. After about 1km you will reach the immaculate Pathside blocks. Perfect rock! ...Follow the path onwards until you reach the head of the reservoir dam. At this point you get your first view of the main boulder field.

No Access Issues

570m altitude and long approach so not recommended for winter visits unless the weather is exceptionally good...

Well worth the walk in...really nice venue.
