Crag features

Larsbreen is a glacier in to the south of Longyearbyen. No major crevasses on this glacier, except the bergschrund at Lars Hertiafjellet. Melt water channels open in winter on the eastern side. The period in May-June is particularly dangerous as snow bridges are thin! Consider taking rescue equipment. Throughout summer the glacier can be crossed without crampons however when temperatures drop and with little snow they are advised.

This logbook entry is for the ice caves (enclosed melt-water channels) that offer an amusing day out and with ice caving that will take you deep into the moraine, or early season ice climbing opportunities. The geometry of the caves varies annually, however the last years have seen one major "drop" (18 m) in the channel which forms a nice icefall early in winter. Alternative options for climbing can be found on the walls of the meltwater channel with routes upto 25 m and there is the option to climb extremely steep ice! The icefall ice is generally of good quality, whereas the glacier ice is extremely brittle with a lot of tension (development of huge cracks by climbers is not uncommon) thus this ice can be tiresome to climb with any feeling of security. The meltwater channels are typically accessible for exploration and climbing from late september until june.
