St Helens - Latha Saor Bloc © Fairmile1

Crag features

Coastal boulders and mini crags. Some parts are tidal. Black Rock is accessible below half tide, White Dirt Rock only at low tide.

Approach notes

Park at the Siccar Point visitor’s information board at NT 80477 70572.

1) For the Latha Saor Bloc, pass the church and cross a fence. Descend grassy slopes to the foreshore then turn right (east) and follow the shoreline to the boulder. 2) For Swallow Craig, White Dirt Rock, Black Rock and the An Ron boulder, follow the path to Siccar Point eastwards for 450m to an opening in a stone wall. Cross a wooden section of fence and descend grassy slopes to the foreshore (see topo in the photo gallery).

Restricted Access

Nesting raptor when we tried to visit 10 July 21. Think its a protected species, and also it was obviously disturbed even if you weren't anywhere near the nest.

Black Rock has seabird nests on the top, so is probably best avoided during nesting season in any case.

It depends what level you climb at and if you like the outdoor. The stack's by far the worst part, dirty and sharp, but the rock quality of the nearby Ròn boulder is much better and the lines are nice. The 'Sliseag ròin' (slice of seal) traverse was pretty fun I thought. It does get better further west. An sgarbh is a very nice and solid line and the Latha-saor boulder had enough to keep me busy for several sessions. And there's the cave as well, which I never bothered to clean up. Overall, it's a nice little venue, close enough to Edinburgh but with a sense of remoteness. Sorry you did not like it.

I didn't really enjoy this venue at all, I started at the far end at the stack . I wouldn't rate these routes very highly. Perhaps the routes further up the coast below the old church are better, maybe it just needs more traffic , but I won't be back!
