Coombs Cave © petegunn

Crag features

A rare horizontal roof made from good quality sandstone.

Worth a visit in its own right or when combined with the other bouldering at Armathwaite.

Problems are quite powerful and will test your mantel/topping out skills.

The lip traverse is outstanding and not to be missed.

The names are shortened from the first 10 stages of the evolution of man and hense development of the cave.

Approach notes

From the village of Armathwaite continue over the bridge and past the Fox and Pheasant pub and take the next right. Continue up the hill passing a couple of laybys untill the road levels out and a house is past on the right ~1mile "Coombs Head" and Coombs Cotttage" Park in the layby of Coombs Wood, room for several cars, please do not block the gate.

Follow the track downhill for a few hundred metres, the roof being visible up to the right through the trees. ~ 5mins

It is possible to walk from the Armathwaite crags by following the track along the top of the crags until the track climbs up the hill towards the roof and parking.

A good bury roof, with a superb lip traverse. Your topping out skills will be fully questioned!
