Large black slab in the Matiri Valley. Only one climb up the least vegetated area of the slab. Worth doing if you're after a good days adventuring in the bush combined with runout but easy climbing and great views. Very undisturbed and tranquil.
Good topo here.
Access is via the Matiri Valley track. Directions to the crag are a little vague, and involve at least an hour of off-track bush travel to get to the base of the climbs.
From the Lake Matiri Hut (great spot to spend the night), walk back along the trail towards the car park until the first creek crossing (approx. 10 - 15 min) [-41.662066 172.330921].
Walk down this small bushy creek on the true right (on a rough formed track, start marked with orange tape) to the first outlet stream from the lake [-41.661983 172.333553].
Several possible approaches from here, all will involve getting at least waist deep wet so bring a change of clothes and use a pack liner!
Cross 20m upstream of where the creek meets the stream and then cross the second outlet stream at large rocks [-41.662320 172.334165]. Current may be strong so beware.
Now head more towards lake to make third outlet stream crossing close to lake (wade). Strike up the hill keeping to the large trees for about 300m before trending right up a rocky drainage for another 200m to arrive at the base of the slab [-41.664079 172.339145].
Can also trend south and uphill until you hit a clearing in which there is a dry stream bed and follow this all the way upto the base of the slab (should end up pretty much right at the foot of the climb).
