Crag features

The main crag is basaltic rock containing iron veins. These formed when iron-rich solutions washed into fracture lines from the overlying red Permian rocks. Iron minerals such as haematite crystallised out, in places gluing together fractured rocks (breccia). The bouldering climbs such rocks and the obvious tunnels beside them are evidence of the mining of the ore - it was even used for the original anti-rust point for the Victoria Falls Bridge in Zambia.

Approach notes

On reaching the outskirts of Brixham bear right at the toll house traffic lights as for Berry Head but go straight on at the mini-roundabout towards the church in Higher Brixham. Turn right at the T-junction and sharply next left then follow brown camping signs. Continue beyond the campsite on tiny lanes to Sharkham car park.

Sharkham Point - follow a succession of paths through thorn scrub towards the point, where you can scramble down to a good viewing area on the seaward side of a zawn.

Sharkham Boulders - follow the signed footpath to St. Mary's Beach but turn right on a major path which heads along the cliff top towards the point. Soon after a lone tree, descend to sea level where the first boulders are located on a rocky fishing platform.

St. Mary's Bay - follow the signed footpath down the steps. The boulders hug its southern shore are are tidal.
