Crag features

An impressive steep and bulging crag above the river Swale, reaching 26m in height but with flakey and loose rock in places. The first route was Hard Rock as an aid climb in 1968 with bolt protected additions in the early 90's. Most routes probably haven't seen many ascents.

The original routes are mostly rebooted but the easier ones still have their old bolts or require trad gear.

The cliff sits below a popular footpath so there's a risk of rocks being knocked down so its probably best for leader and belayer to wear a helmet.

Approach notes

Park in Keld village and follow the Pennine Way north crossing the river Swale by footbridge, 50m beyond the bridge turn right and follow the track on the north side of the valley that runs parallel to the river. Option 1 is where the path starts to ascend go down and through a gate in the fence. Then follow the edge of the fence back up the hillside until its possible to traverse across the steep bank to gain the right side of the crag.

Option 2 is to follow the footpath up the hillside until the crag comes into view and then carefully climb over the fence.

Descend the bank and traverse under the crag.

Rose bushes coming back with vengeance and still loads of loose rock for everyone to enjoy. Helmets are a must, a clip stick is strongly advised.

Sun trap. Take helmets for the choss and long trousers for the walk in (stinging nettles in summer) and swimming things to jump into the fantastic river.

July/August Keld in Action completely rebolted with anchor. Soldier rebolted but without an anchor as yet. Rock On had a good amount of vegetation removed, in particular the rose bushes.
