Hill features

Speer can be ascended most easily from the straightforward path on the southeast side.

The Kletterweg on the northwest ridge is equipped as a rather unusual klettersteig (via-ferrata), the ironwork consisting almost entirely of a large diameter cable, well secured at decent intervals. This provides the necessary stability for the interesting moves up the 'Nagelfluh' conglomerate type rock consisting of rounded stones embedded, generally securely, in the base material. Note however that there is one short section of pure scrambling.

The southwest ridge is ascended from the north side and is a rough mountain path, exposed in a few places and with one short rock step protected with a cable, and serves best as a return to the northwest side following an ascent of the Kletterweg.

Approach notes

The easiest path on the southeast flank is best reached from Amden, also using the cable car up to pt.1292m if required. The kletterweg could also be accessed this way by using the col on the northeast ridge to cross to the northwest side. But better is to start on the northwest side directly by parking at Mitllerwengi, at the end of the road up the valley, starting from just southeast of Kaltbrun.
