Crag features
Ignimbrite pocket pulling. Great position on the edge of Taupo with routes in all grades. Magic camping ground and cheap at only $10 a night. Check rules in guidebook.
Approach notes
Whanganui bay is on the western side of lake Taupo. Access is via a dirt road off provincial highway 32, 26km from Tihoi Trading Post. Warning this dirt road is rough.
Closed for many years due to breakdown of communication with the maori people on who's land this crag sits, access has now been re-established by the ACAT (Aotearoa Climbing Access Trust) on a trial basis. For this year (2023) the site is open for climbing from July till 30th November. More information can be found on the ACAT website. Climbers must register and pay a fee before arriving to climb.
Restricted Access
Climbing is usually banned here, but ACAT have established a trial re-access that ran mid summer to November 30th of this year. More info on their website. You must pay and register to climb here on that website.

No bullshit - this place just enfolds you -" Mere" welcomes yuo at the house when you drop off your 10 bucks..where can you go for 10 bucks - shit we should be giving her 20 or 30 - You know these people have been looking after this piece of land for years -but for them ...???condos???, resorts??? who knows - but Mere and Pete are the latest to avoid that happening - lets help them keep it as pure as it is now - lets keep the developers out!!
