Mount Colonel Foster is the most impressive mountain peaks on Vancouver Island and has a storied history of alpine ascents. It is located at the head of a pristine, old-growth valley in Strathcona Provincial Park. The massif wraps around a deep glacial cirque with a jagged ridge dropping off dramatically over 1000m on the east face and 500m to the west.
There are some very long summer rock climbs and winter routes up the east face, a scattering of routes on the west side. The summit ridge traverse is one of the more popular ways to climb and experience the full exposure of the mountain.
Approach notes
Mount Colonel Foster is most commonly approached on the Elk River trail, a well-maintained BC Parks trail from Highway 28. The trail follows the house of the river up to Landslide Lake, about 10km which takes between 2 to 6 hours. From the outlet of Landslide Lake a rough path leads around the south side of the lake and up to a smaller moraine lake at the base of the east face.
