The Tor © Paul Clarke

Crag features

A long line of boulders and mini-edges facing towards the summit of Simon's Seat and Hen Stones set in a stunning position. Ideal for a warm day though some problems face the afternoon sunshine. Avoid at all costs if a strong wind is blowing.

Landings are generally flat and grassy. The crag has some good problems and short routes. The rock is good but remember that these moorland locations generally have some scrittle!

Approach notes

The crag is just to the east of the main Valley of Desolation to Simon's Seat path and reached in a couple of minutes along a branch track from which the tops of the boulders are obvious. The junction (located when the path levels out) can also be reached by taking the track up from Howgill and straight on when reaching the moor. Either way it takes a good 55 min and the walk is one of the nicest in Yorkshire. Parking is very limited so an early start is recommended or pay big bucks for the privilege of the bijou location at Cavendish Pavilion. This adds extra plod time but raises the cake potential.

Perhaps best to access the far end of the crag along the track and then across to it where there is an obvious tor and a fine free-standing boulder with some good warm-up problems.
