Crag features

To the west of the town of Callosa de Segura is a series of rugged red hills that, despite initial appearances to the contrary, contain much good climbing, there is much here to interest the passing climber. The area is close enough to the Alicante/Benidorm area to be a reasonable objective for a day's visit, and although the cliffs have been climbed on here by the locals for over 40 years, visitors have always been rare.

The esoteric local guide (Senderismo y Escalada por la Vega Baja del Segura) covers many more climbs in this intriguing area.

The shorter routes at Callosa are very sheltered, and make a good bet on cool or windy days. All the cliffs take little seepage and dry rapidly after rain.

For those climbing in the summer months, conditions can be furnace-like, but some shade can be found early in the morning or in the evening.

Approach notes

The cliffs are aligned to the north of the N340 and the CV900 which are easily reached from the A7 motorway. The Orihuela junction (81) is just over 40km south of Alicante airport. Park on a track just off the road between Callosa and Redovan, next to a cemetery (be careful to check what time the gates will be locked - there is ample parking on the road for evening climbing). Find the entrance to the track on the rhs of the parking area - note the climbing restriction sign (there is currently a climbing ban between January and June). Follow the path then turn uphill to cross the riverbed via a short traverse across slabs. Continue, following the track up the hill, to arrive at the slab of Sector Solana. The sectors are to the left and right of here.

Restricted Access

Climbing prohibited from 1 Jan to 31 Jun on El Poligono and La Cantera crags.

Restriction signs on the cemetry path seem to indicate that the above restrictions apply to all of Callosa.
