Hill features

Dachstein is a huge plateau mountain with south faces up to 1000m high, an assortment of small glaciers and every conceivable type of mountain activity - climbing, via ferratas, ski mountaineering, caving.

Climbing started as early as the 1880s, and there are quite a few big classics up to 50 pitches. Many of these now have some bolts at the belays, but are still mountaineering routes with a glacier descent. In another development, more userfriendly bolted climbing at amenable grades and on shorter (200-350m) walls on the plateau have been developed. These are reached from the rather pricey cable car and have a walk-in of up to 1 hour.
