Crag features

The Hollhörner consists of two peaks N and S dominated by the impressive South ridge of the S peak. The only way to access the peak is either via a rock climb or a precarious scramble.

Approach notes

Park in Oberstdorf and follow the road towards the ski jump signposted Oytalhaus (Oytal valley road). Follow this road on past the Oytalhaus to the Käseralpe. In the summer this can be done on mountain bikes, in the winter it is best to ski. From the Käseralpe follow route 431 to the Wildenfeldhütte then up to Hornbachjoch, note the winter line stays generally south of the summer path, after the crossing the 1800m contour.

An alternative approach is to take route 431 from Hinterhornbach to the Hornbachjoch.

The Hornbachjoch marks the start of the South Ridge and the start of the S-N traverse of the South Peak; UIAA 6- (4, A0) 8 pitches all the belays are bolted. Descent down the N ridge to the col between the North and South peaks is a precarious scramble on scree and loose friable rock, descend down to the col, then down the broad gully (east) till a traverse below the East face can be made back to Hornbachjoch.
