Looking to Bridestones from Whirlaw © jonathandavey

Crag features

A mini edge of boulders on a hillside above Todmorden. The rock is rough, clean moorland grit, and dries very quickly after rain. Landings are generally good, padded by the heather.

The boulders make a good low to mid grade circuit, with a mix of slabs, aretes and turn-the-lip mantels. There are a few hard projects still to be done, mostly rocking onto hanging slabs.

A video of some of the problems is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqGCB09Qa1w

Approach notes

Whirlaw may be reached by foot from several directions, the nearest parking is along the verge of Eastwood Road. From here walk South down a Windy Harbour Lane, at the end of the road turn right along a bridleway. The stones will appear on your left, less than 10 minutes' walk from the car.

No Access Issues

The rocks are (almost all) on Access Land so there shouldn't be any problems for climbers. The bridleway below the path is popular with walkers, runners and mountain bikers, avoid excessive chalking or gardening. Occasionally there may be sheep in the surrounding fields, keep dogs under control.

The main group of boulders is crossed by the line of an old wall/fence, this is the boundary of the Access Land. The boulders East of the wall are technically out of bounds.
