Crag features

One buttress containing some fine climbing high on Stanbury Moor. This rocky outcrop is well known within literary circles, as it is a likely candidate for 'Penistone Crag' in Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. Folklore suggests that any maiden who can crawl through the cave at the base of the crag will be married within the year.

Save your visit for a warm summers evening and enjoy the solitude and stunning views looking out towards Ilkley Moor and Otley Chevin / Almscliff in the background.

The crag is not heavily used and some subtle gardening might be required. Grades listed are for clean and dry conditions so a cautious approach may be wise as the crag is exposed.

Approach notes

Whichever way you approach the walk-in is substantial. The shortest appears to be from Scar Top Road, West of Stanbury. Park up in a small layby located at the bottom of Whitestone Clough (at the Western end of Ponden reservoir). Follow the footpaths steeply up past Ponden Slack and then continue up Ponden Clough until the crag can be seen dominating the skyline. Approach is 20-30 min depending on how energetic you are feeling.
