Crag features

Known locally as El Valle the barranco is situated on the motorway side of Orihuela mountain and should not be confused with El valle at the Cresta de Gallo. The routes are mostly low grade slab climbs, well bolted and with easy access. On entering the barranco the first sector on the left is sector Ping Pong (13 routes). The three central routes are very worthwhile (6a+, 6b, 6b ) All the routes here have chain link hangers on the first 2 bolts

The first sector on the right (sector Placa Tumbada) has 9 routes the hardest being 5+. The threads on the bolts have been cemented to stop the hangers from being stolen. The next sector on the right has 6 routes and start from a large ledge which involves a short scramble up through the vegetation. Continuing up the barranco there are a further 3 sectors on the right which start from breaks in the vegetation and give good climbing. On the left hand side of the barranco is another slabby sector with 9 routes (no details). Finally the barranco has a very impressive head wall with another 6 routes

Approach notes

Go off the Elche to Murcia motorway at the new Orihuela exit and head for Orihuela. Take the next slip road towards La Matanza and take the first exit at the next roundabout again signposted La Matanza. After 150m take a left and continue on this road. passing over the motorway until you get to a right turn for La Matanza (large waste ground and a single house). Just after this turning is a left turn sign posted Los Yages. Take this single track road which goes underneath the motorway and park considerately at a junction about 50m from some metal gates at the entrance to the lemon groves. Do not drive up as the gates get locked in the afternoon. Walk up through the extensive lemon groves and where the track swings right take the third turning on the left ( white tank and pylon) At the top the track swings to the right passing a small reservoir and the entrance to the barranco.
