A real geological oddity with magnesian limestone on top of a base of sandstone. The crag may be made up of two rock types, but it offers a really wide diversity of climbing styles. The last moderater, Toreador, wanted to celebrate the “classics of the crag”: Compte Crack (MVS) and Cheesecake (HS)”. My choice would be the ascending trio of extremes made up by Identity Crisis, Mighty Mouse and Hard Chedder – short, some pegs and some uncertainty about the rock.
Recent developments have been the bouldering circuit, which is a good bet if nearby Spofforth is rained off (most of these have probably been done before) and a wild modern XS which could point the way to the future development of the crag.
