The Long Edge of Scout Crag © jonathandavey

Crag features

The Scout is the sprawling jumble of boulders and craglets lining the edge of the vast moorland opposite the popular venue of Widdop. Unlike the well-travelled and well-documented venue over the road, Scout continues to bask in relative obscurity, with only the occasional discerning visitor. This is partly down to the history of restricted access and complete lack of accurate documentation. The climbing, and particularly the bouldering, is as good as any in the area.

Scout has a sunny aspect, a quick-drying nature, very rough grit and steep climbing above generally good landings. The superb moorland setting and far-ranging vistas across Widdop and the moors beyond seal the deal on a fantastic and grossly underrated grit venue.

Approach notes

600m further past the Widdop parking (if approaching from Hebden Bridge) a small layby is reached on the right-hand side. A steep path winds its way up to the right-hand side of the crag.

Restricted Access

The land is a privately owned grouse moor which may be restricted during shooting - please observe any signs. No dogs.

Seasonal Restrictions

Dates: 1 March to 31 July

Reason: Nesting Birds

The restriction applies to night time access (for lamping / lantern sessions) during nesting season. Ground nesting birds are numerous in this area and easily disturbed at night, so please avoid visits after dark during the spring and early summer.
