Crag features

From Grange-over-Sands, head towards Lindale and the A590, then turn right at signs for Grange golf club. Follow the road parallel to the railway line (on the right) for a few hundred yards, past a small farm and over a small river. Park in the layby on the right about 50yds after the birdge below a large, stepped scrambling crag. Follow the gap between crag and river towards the railway line. It narrows quite rapidly and some scrambling is required. Once within about 30yds of the railway line, the crag to the left bends away sharply. Scramble to the left and up to reach a large open area between the railway line and the quarry face.

Some areas are loose. There are about 20 reported routes, but there is much scope for development and 'route density' is low, with large unclimbed areas across the quarry. Most routes are by Charlie Vigano, though Andy Hyslop supplied a few. Many routes need to be re-climbed and documented as landmarks have changed - it is over 25 years since the last full guide was published (1983).

There is a useful descent route along large ledges among the first few climbs of the quarry. A ruin towards the right-hand end of the first area provides a useful landmark, as do the various trees at the top and bottom of the face. The topout provides great views across the Kent channel towards Arnside and Arnside Knott, and on clear days you can see Morecambe (an unappetising prospect for some).

Approach notes

Access situation and ownership are unknown. Please note there is no fence between the quarry and the railway line, so please keep away from the line in order to avoid attention from the BTP. The quarry is in an SSSI so no bolting or pegging.

Restricted Access

To quote the guidebook 'A tottering pile of choss'.

Seasonal Restrictions

Dates: 15 February to 30 June

Reason: Nesting Birds

Signed restriction for nesting raven and peregrine, applies to the whole crag.
