Dave Henderson on the fingery and technical wall climb of Living Dead (7b) Uphill Quarry © Mark Glaister

Crag features

Specialising in hybrid face routes, traditionally with spaced bolts although less so nowadays. Has been recently redevoped sympathetically to give a great mixture of sport and hybrid routes, don't worry, there's plenty to get scared on still. Fast-drying, a good winter venue although it does catch all the wind going. Dog mess can be a problem at the base of the crag. Highly visible to the general public so best behaviour please.

Belay bolts have been installed along the cliff top edge, courtesy of Weston Super Mare Council and Mendip Outdoors, making the climbing much more accessible.

New definitive GWR guidebooks (2024) for both trad and sport.

Approach notes

The quarry is clearly visible above Uphill Marina at the far end of the village. The solitary hilltop church can be seen from miles around.

Access to the quarry is gained via an opening in the massive sea defence wall at the end of Uphill Way. Parking is available either side of the sea wall or if this is full, back on Uphill Way. The access lane is shared by Uphill boat yard, and must not be blocked.

Approach past a decent cafe.

Climbing is banned on the conservation area at far right hand end of the crag and is obviously fenced off.

Restricted Access

The best climbing faces are available to climbers but access is not permitted to the right of ‘Graveyard Gate’, (with the exclusion of ‘Meet Thy Creator’) to help protect rare plants.

Seasonal Restrictions

Reason: Nesting Birds

Please do not block the road to the crag - the land is shared with the Uphill boat yard and access may be harmed by inconsiderate parking.

Does anyone know what happened to the topo and listing of the newer bolted routes?
