A work of art - literally. John Frankland's Untitled Boulder (2001). The boulder is 4m high, weighs 100 tonnes and was transported from Portland to the grounds of the stately home for climbers to climb on. The boulder has a easy slab face, two vertical faces and a more difficult overhanging face.
Approach notes
The gallery considers access to groups on a case by case basis.
| As this is the nearest piece of rock to climb anywhere near me I thought I would enquire with the estate as to whether it could be used at all.
This is the response i got:

Back in 2001 people were expressly invited to climb the rock by Compton Verney and John Frankland, the artist who ‘created’ it.
However, at that time Compton Verney was not open as an art gallery and occasional ‘events’ were conducted in the grounds.
John Frankland’s rock was one of these such events and any climbing was closely supervised.
Now the gallery is open and the rock easily accessible by untrained and unsupervised visitors of all ages & abilities we cannot take the risk of people climbing it during opening hours.
However, if you wish to bring an organised and trained group of climbers out of hours then I’m sure we could organise something for you for a modest donation to cover our staffing costs (including the presence of a trained first aider).
I would be happy for your group to visit Tue – Sun between 9am - 11am or 5pm - 6.45pm and Mondays between 9am – 6.45pm, by advanced booking only.

For each person in the group will be required to provide evidence of climbing qualifications and membership to your club/society.
I will also need each of you to sign a waiver absolving Compton Verney from any responsibility for any injury of accident that occur on site or as a result of climbing on the boulder.
In addition I require a copy of club or society’s Public Liability Insurance.
I’m sorry if all this seems onerous but society has become so litigious that there is no real alternative.
I recommend a donation of £10 per person.
