Hill features

Mount Earnslaw, also known by its Māori name of Pikirakatahi, is a 2,819m mountain on New Zealand's South Island. It is named after Earnslaw village in the parish of Eccles, Berwickshire, hometown of the surveyor John Turnbull Thomson's father.

Approach notes

From the parking at the roadhead of the Rees Valley start of the Rees-Dart Track, follow the Rees Dart Track north for approximately 6km until the turning for the 25 mile hut. Ford the river where you can and follow the valley for a further 2km until a DOC sign marks the way up a path through the woods on the west side of the valley. Follow the path up eventually to Kea Basin then gain and traverse the glacier southwest for a further 1km to Wright Col, beyond which is the Esquilant Bivi hut.
