Crag features

Also known as "Clougha Pike Crag" or "Quernmore Crag", this small, esoteric quarry is located on the edge of the Forest of Bowland, near Windy Clough and Baines Cragg. It has a small number of routes up to 10m, mostly in the lower grades, although a steeper section of rock provides a few harder climbs.

There is some loose rock, a few dubious holds and a distinct lack of protection possibilities on most of the climbs, meaning that, whilst grades are generally low, less confident leaders might find these climbs daunting. In addition, the crag seeps after rain, takes little sun and tends to be very midgey in the summer. However... if you're in the area. There are stakes at the top that seem solid enough to belay off (check and make your own judgement), although they're well hidden amongst the bilberry bushes. Beware that the fence should not be belayed off: both to avoid conflict with the landowner and because it is not solid!

Nearby are several other venues: Rigg Lane Boulders, Windy Clough and Far Side Boulders, Baines Cragg and Little Cragg. If you begin at the Rigg Lane/Birk Bank cark park, you can easily link Rigg Lane Boulders, Ottergear, Baines Cragg and Little Cragg, for a full day of charming esoterica. However, if you have access to transport and sufficient time, you may be better advised to go elsewhere.

Approach notes

The crags are near Quernmore, on the western edge of the Forest of Bowland, a 30 minute cycle from Lancaster. From the Birk Bank car park on Rigg Lane, head through the gate up the footpath. After about 100m, there is a fork in the path; take the path left until an aquaduct (the path right leads through some woods to Windy Clough). The quarry lies across the aquaduct, through a gate on the right.
