Finedon Slabs - the parapet. © Wingnut

Crag features

The "rock" is actually concrete - the remains of an ironstone crushing plant whose cracked and weathered remains now provide Northamptonshire's only entry in a climbing guide. A perfect opportunity to use the word "esoteric". [Liz Asquith]

Approach notes

From the junction of the A6 and A510 at Finedon, turn into Orchard Rd, and then into St mary's Avenue. About 100m down the lane, turn left onto a footpath, and follow this for another 100m until the crag is reached.

It's in the "Pocket Park", which is a wooded ex-quarry. The flat top of the "slab" is clearly visible in the aerial photo.

Are you sure it doesn't exist? You can still see it on Google Maps which I am sure is more recent than 2004. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/preview/place/Finedon,+Northamptonshire,+UK/@52.3407183,-0.6586628,129m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x4877a0341d853929:0xabcccbde5fc88d82

We had some fun here today... it's more scrambling than climbing, but then I am seriously starved of climbing. :-)

Sad to say, there is a guide book covering Finedon Slabs - "Hitler's Buttock" just about says it all.... It actually used to be quite good practice (10 years ago), but was a right mess last time I visited

In reply to Colin: You mean it was once useable! Tried to seek it out in desperation once when I lived in Towcester. Biggest anti climax in the world. Just turned around and came back. You would have to be seriously starved of climbing to consider climbing here.

I used to live in finedon, and tho i know nothing about climbing, this 'slab' is actually just a wall. it is behind a few houses, on the entrance into the country park, (if it can be called that). it is vertical, but i wouldnt say it was worth travelling to! and from what i remember, the council have locked it up behind a wire fence!!
CHARMAINE - 01/Dec/05
Still there behind the houses but in a real mess would need a lot of work to get it useable again.
Colin Barwell - 06/Dec/04
DOESN'T EXIST!! It has been turned into a housing estate and has all been removed.
