Monastir is a limestone cliff giving excellent steep climbing. It dries quickly and is very sheltered—so much that carnivorous midges are often a problem in summer.
Excellent steep climbing with abundant finger pockets. [David Blair]
In the Marlbank Scenic Loop, south-east of Blacklion/Belcoo.
Approaches: The Scenic Loop is sighposted from the Blacklion- Florencecourt road, and approximately halfway round the loop (6.5km) (at Cuilcagh mountain park crag is below) there is a small layby at the top of the crag. Reach the floor by descending a small path on the right of the layby, looking south. Climbs finish on the road.
Fair warning - was there late April 2021 & picked up a number of black-legged Deer Ticks (aka Castor Bean ticks) & dislodged several large loose blocks buried under moss & vegetation at the top. If you still choose to go wear long sleeves, tuck your trousers into your socks and apply your repellant of choice liberally to any exposed areas. Also, check yourself thoroughly afterwards (be warned that the nymph & larval stages of this tick are tiny...size of a pinhead) be careful setting up belays or abseils at the top & be vigilant at the bottom when belaying or standing close to the crag.
